The HP-97 uses a charger that outputs 9 volts AC nominally. There's a single diode and resistor inside that 97 that the AC current passes through in order to charge the battery. You need to have the battery pack in place to use the calcualtor because the AC is not filtered and will not supply enough current to run the calculator (expecailly if you're printing).
