Looking for a manual or any documentation that would help understand this calculator. I can't tell for sure but I believe there is a problem with the LCD driver IC or a discrete component. The rightmost screen characters beyond 8 have 3 center columns that turn dark when numbers are typed but when a backspace is done the outer 2 columns turn dark. So it appears to have 5 columns per character and all segments in each matrix appears to work, but just don't turn on and off correctly. So I don't think it is the LCD but another component. If the segments were bad they would not turn on at all, or would stay on all the time. Since this is a fairly rare calculator, and if I can't find a way to repair this unit, then maybe the LCD can be used to repair another EL-51xx calculator.
