Not surprising - the general wisdom is that WD-40 can free things up temporarily, but ultimately it recongeals and makes things worse. Sounds like you'll need to remove the carriage and soak it in solvent, then relube. If you are willing to experiment, you can try soaking it in automatic transmission fluid and see if that cures it. Very messy, though.
