Batteries in SR-16

Old TI models like the SR10, SR11 or SR16 use internal NiCads. Recently I disassembled a SR16, removed the (corroded) cells, cleaned up the mess and put in regulat alcaline batteries. It worked well, but the display looked a little 'too bright', so I quickly removed the batteries. Do you know if extended use of alcalines can damage this machine or the SR10 / SR11 ? TIA.
