I also have a working Epson HX-20 unit. I experienced the same problem: the unit cannot switch on with dead battery. You have to replace the battery. I don't know if the unit work safe without battery; for your test i suggest you to replace the original power supply with any plug-compatible 6V 'stabilized' power supply. Why? In many old computer the battery act as power filter and voltage stabilizer. Goos Luck
