I believe that the K-16 is constructed just like the SE 88M -- the back of the case is glued on. You need to get a thin, sharp knife (I use an X-acto) into the seam all the way around the case, then pry off the back (there's no plastic tab interlock as you often find on calcs of this period). Try prying along the seam on the top edge of the calculator, I think that's the easiest place.
