"These rack gears live directly below the input sliders. The position of the input slider moves the cog forward on a square shaft (note numbers engraved on the face of the normally hidden wheels to rear of cogs). Each rack gear is shifted to the right by a pin on the direct multiplier table assembly, which in turn rotates a gear that turns a square shaft and delivers a number to the carriage. " Jim McDermaid
