James, as you know I think your patent is great and conforms more easily to the way we think. I had a chance to check it out here and I like it. One question: Is the keyboard going to conform to numeric key-pads or are you proposing new locations for the numbers as you have on your web site here? I would opt for keeping the current key-pad and including extra keys from your idea. I'd like to also reiterate my suggestion that a good idea for the first market of this is childrens computers to make it easier for them to learn and to introduce your idea to an "up-and-coming" generation. That's all. Thank you for letting me visit your web-site. Good job! It looks terrific! Keep up the good work! Keane is lucky to have you!

This does seem much easier when doing data entry or calculations.. I work in tech support for a company that develops software for depreciation calculations, for both tax and financial reporting purposes, and am often called on to "prove" my softwares computation, ie do them by hand for the customer to prove that the numbers are correct. Often the customer will rattle off a huge number (in an irritated voice), so I have to take it down quickly. After a while you get good at it, but doing it with this tool will be easier. By the way, my parents are Marco and Fabiola Vaca, I believe you know them.

Your web site is impresive and the articles are very professional-looking. Your extended numeric entry, from what I tried, seemed nice. It took a little to get used to, but once I got the hang of it, it went pretty well. It seems to be especially good for numbers with a fair amount of zeros. Kenton Green,

After posting ads for my Curta calculator on several different web sites without any sucess, or bids, I placed an ad on the calculator email list, calculate-list-recipients@x86.webcom.com. This email list was brought to my attention by James Redin. To my surprise and pleasure, I had my first full price offer within 30 minutes of placing the ad. After the first day, I had a total of 8 full price offers on my Curta. Thank you James for all of your wonderful help.

James, What a small world. I live and teach in Santa Clarita. I teach second grade at Pinetree Community School over in Canyon Country. I became interested in calculators when a parent brought in an HP 65 to show my third grade class sometime in 1975. I have often accused HP that the blinking red leds really were subliminal commands to"BUY ME! BUY ME!". I went from a 55 to 67 to 97 to 41C, CV, CX. Of course now I have an ancient Pentium 166 system. (18 months old!!!!). I really enjoyed your site. It is a nice site and local too!

HP-80 note: At a meeting at HP in San Jose circa 1980 we were told that about 2-3 weeks after the introduction of the HP80, HP support received numerous calls saying that the HP 80 was calculating incorrectly. The problem turned out to be the fact that it used 10 digits internally while the current books of tables only had 2-4 digit accuracy. The HP-80 was more accurate than the books then in current use.

Dear James, I can confirm that he MADIX is a Sprossenrad machine. In fact it is a copy of the FACIT machine, made in eastern germany. There is a model in Breker Auction catalog dated oct 24, 1992. I am very impressed with this site. I have a modest number of old adding machines and calculators that I have collected over the past 20 years. Most are of the "garden variety," but I have one that is significant: "The Millionaire." I am very curious as to its value. It has push buttons instead of the levers that I've seen on this site. Was there more than one model of "The Millionaire?" I realize that this may not be the forum for such questions, and if not, I thank you for the excellent site anyway. I discovered LOTS of valuable information.

I got interested in calculators and adding machines after buying a set of books at a used book store. The books (set of 2), " Ingenious Mechanisms for Designers and Inventors" copyright 1930 by the Industrial Press of New York City. The books had a section that explained (in very good detail) how the adders and accumulators work. After that, I was hooked. I am glad to see others are also appreciative of these inventions of our grandfathers and great-grandfathers time. Cams, ratchets and levers may have been replaced by microprocessors, servos and LCD displays; but mechanisms like some of these old machines hide inside their cases are real works of art in their own right. Thanks for your web pages

8/3/99 Very interesting web site! Believe it or not I still use my fractometer. Am looking to purchase another one. Mine is called a "sizematic" & measures about 2"x 10". It adds or subtracts feet, inches, and fractions down to 1/16". Does anyone out there have one?

I have enjoyed the visit to your web site. At Boeing Whichita we used a large mechanical calculator in about 1955 to calculate the square root for tooling layout. The machine had no square root button and we did the square root by subtraction starting at the left of a number until we got nines then added back and went to the next number to the right. It worked but it took too much time so we started useing 15 place trig tables and trig. The memory is not too great but I remember some joker found a mumber and played a march on the machine which really did a danc when some calculations were tried. Thanks for the trigger of the memory glands. Elmer Jennings

Thank you so much for memorializing and paying tribute to Dr. An Wang in your article "The Doctor and his calculators." I had the privilege of working for Wang Laboratories and meeting The Doctor and have been saddened to see that his name is seldom found in encyclopedias or mentioned when recounting the history of computers. It appears that some people seem to believe that computers began (and will end!) with Mr. Gates. I ran across your article by accident and it made me feel proud to have been associated with a company that had such a significant contributor to our society. Sincerely, Cindy Prescher

About forty years ago I worked for Burroughs as a serviceman in Winnipeg, Canada. I worked on many models from the Class 1 up to the E101 small scale electronic computer. During my time with Burroughs I was instrumental in destroying so many of these machines that were brought in as trade-ins. Sigh. Ooo!! Looks like a fascinating site. I'm looking forward to spending many happy hours here. :-) Meanwhile, anybody know how to attempt the refurbishment of a 1950s-vintage Monroe mechanical calculator? Cool beast when it worked, but it was getting 'iffy' even when I got hold of it as a kid in 1975. Nowadays it just spins and spins unless I open the case and push on things 'til they engage. A most disorganized mode of operation, to be sure, and not very useful. Would love to restore its former glory. E-mail me if you know something that might help! :-) Thanks in advance!

I worked at Wang Labs, and consider it the highest point of achievement in my life. Finding your site touched me like you can not imagine. Out of 30,000 thousand employees, I would pay to find any employee that did not think Dr. Wang was a genius equal to that of Thomas Edison. I was not an executive of the company only an employee.
